A2: How to Understand the U-Curve of Cultural Development

Due to the regular ups and downs of life, the U-Curve of Cultural Adjustment has bumps throughout the process. Different stages of adjustment can overlap. For example, a newcomer who is in the recovery stage of adjustment may have moments when s/he feels total frustration with the surrounding culture. From the U-curve of Cultural Adjustment below, we use the term adjustment because the newcomer’s experiences and feelings shift as the person grows and adjusts to the new surroundings.
