D1: How Can I Establish Trust with My Newcomer?

Over time, a deeper level of trust and respect may be established, and both you and your newcomer family may feel more comfortable sharing what each of you considers private information. Remember that this will occur at different points in your partnership. 

Communication is a two-way street: You cannot expect others to share something personal without reciprocating. Just as there are things about the newcomer family that you may want to know, there are things the newcomer family members will want to know about you. In some cases, the questions may make you uncomfortable: A question that is appropriate and even polite in one culture may be considered inappropriate in another. Reflect on how to maintain appropriate levels of trust and respect when working with your newcomer family in the following critical incident.
