A3: Is My Newcomer Eligible for Health Care? How Would I Know?

Without health insurance, healthcare in the U.S. can be very expensive. There are many different kinds of health insurance which offer different levels of coverage. Some people have insurance through their place of employment. For those who do not have insurance through their place of employment, the state of Connecticut offers a number of programs depending on income, family size, and other factors.

Please note: In Connecticut, there are several free and low-cost health programs such as the HUSKY Health plan, Healthy Start, Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicaid, and Choices.  The Refugee Medical Assistance program, similiar to the Medicaid Program, is also available for individuals and families in need.  Several clinics in the Hartford area provide low-cost or free services such as Community Health Services, Charter Oak Health Center, and Malta House
